Despray Environmental – Aerosol Can Recycling

DESPRAY Environmental provides closed-loop aerosol recycling systems that safely separate and recover the metal, liquid contents, and propellant gases from used, rejected, and post-consumer aerosol cans. Instead of sending these materials to landfill, incineration, or releasing gases to the atmosphere, DESPRAY enables them to be recycled, reused, or recovered for energy. Our technology helps turn hazardous aerosol waste into valuable material streams while improving safety, resource recovery, and circularity.

DeSpray Environmental: A Dutch Leader in Aerosol Recycling Since 2010

DESPRAY Environmental was founded through a partnership between Mike MacKay of Canada, bringing decades of aerosol recycling experience, and Dutch entrepreneur and engineer Eelco Osse. Together, they set out to develop and commercialize the world’s most advanced system for safely and completely recycling aerosol cans.

Major milestones include the continued international expansion of DESPRAY technology, Mike MacKay being named a Recycling Hero 2024 by the Global Recycling Foundation, and DESPRAY winning Start-up of the Year 2025 at TOM’s Business Event.

Today, DESPRAY is in full production, supplying high-capacity aerosol recycling systems to customers around the world.

Our future plans focus on further international expansion, particularly across Asia and Africa, as well as the development of our FoodFuel initiative with FREEE Recycle in Nigeria, recovering aerosol propellant gases for use as cleaner cooking fuel.

We are seeking partnerships with aerosol fillers and manufacturers, recyclers, hazardous-waste processors, post-consumer waste organizations, and government or EPR organizations.

Our priority regions are Asia, Africa, and other developing circular-economy markets where aerosol waste volumes are growing and improved recovery infrastructure is needed.

DESPRAY’s impact is measurable across emissions reduction, resource recovery and circular use of materials.

  • CO₂ reduction: A DS5000 system can reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 1,570 tonnes per year, depending on the waste stream and operating conditions. Over a 15-year machine lifetime, this represents the potential for more than 23,000 tonnes of avoided CO₂ emissions.
  • Material recovery: DESPRAY systems are designed to recover 100% of the metal, liquid contents and propellant gases from processed aerosol cans, preventing valuable materials from being lost through landfill, incineration or atmospheric release.
  • Processing capacity: One DS5000 can process approximately 10–15 million aerosol cans per year on a single 8-hour shift, allowing large volumes of hazardous aerosol waste to be converted into usable material streams.
  • Resource and energy savings: Recovered aluminium and steel can be returned to conventional recycling, while recovered liquids and gases can be reused or converted into energy, reducing demand for virgin resources and fossil fuels.
  • Employment and growth: DESPRAY currently supports a specialized international engineering, manufacturing and service team and is designed to scale production with continued international growth.
