The Dutch approach to unlocking circular solutions in the built environment

Date: Wednesday 27th of September
Time: 13:45 – 14:45 US EDT
Location: Room 207B

The Netherlands has set a national goal to be fully circular in 2050 and to reduce the use of raw materials by 50% in 2030. In the Netherlands, the construction sector is responsible for 50% of the total raw material use and 40% of the materials used in this sector is discarded after use. Similar numbers are observed globally. In order to meet the national goal, it is essential to decrease these numbers.

The Dutch are known for their innovative capacity, entrepreneurship, and collaborative nature. This session highlights some of the principles utilized and explored to stimulate this attitude for the benefit of the construction industry. These are amongst others the introduction of progressive standards and minimum performance requirements for the built environment as well as a strategic re-evaluation of funding and procurement mechanisms.
