NL-LATAM Mission on Circular Economy and Waste Management

The NL-LATAM Mission on Circular Economy and Waste Management took place the past 14-23 April 2021. This event represented a joint effort from the Regional Business Development team of the Embassy network of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Latin America, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO). Moderated by Freek van Eijk, Holland Circular Hotspot.
The Mission on Waste Management and Circular Economy in the Netherlands
The digital waste mission brought together 16 experts from eight Latin American countries to a virtual visit to the Netherlands. During the Mission, participants from the Netherlands and Latin America attended several online sessions, one-on-one meetings that encountered cooperation and business opportunities. For two days, participants were able to look at the Dutch expertise in addressing waste management holistically from the policymaking, implementing the latest innovations and technologies, and the best practices from initiatives in the public and private sectors.

The Webinars
The first webinar focused on the ‘Dutch Waste Management Policy and the Opportunities for Cooperation.’ High-level speakers from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, the Amsterdam Economic Board, and VNG International presented the dutch waste management road for becoming more circular from the importance of the public policy monitoring and impact of the waste management program. Additionally, during the round table, the relevance of engaging communities was a key strategy. Here, most Latin American countries shared their everyday challenges in terms of formalizing the waste sector and how it is possible to adopt a circular economy. Also, during the session, the Netherlands Enterprise Agency and Metasus Organization encourage the importance of cooperation. The panelists presented the significance of partnership cooperation.
While the second part of the round table focused on showcased and good practices involved in implementing waste management solutions. In this session, participants listened to different stakeholders and dutch companies on how they brought innovations for more sustainable landfills, measuring data for waste collection and separation, the benefits of recycling plastics. Likewise, the discussion mainly addressed the smart solution from waste to product solutions along the crucial part for a sustainable waste management chain. Panelists presented three main ideas addressed organic waste solutions, demolition waste into useful materials, and waste to energy.
