The Netherlands Officially Puts Critical Raw Materials on the Agenda
February 19, 2025
On February 12, the government of The Netherlands took an important step in securing the supply of critical raw materials, recognizing their essential role in the energy transition, digitalization, and key industries such as defense, aerospace, and health. The newly launched Netherlands Materials Observatory (NMO) will monitor supply risks, assess vulnerabilities in value chains, and provide early warnings when disruptions occur. This initiative, led by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, aligns with the broader European strategy to reduce dependence on non-EU suppliers.
With 17 strategic raw materials, including lithium, iridium, and cobalt, crucial for industries such as batteries, semiconductors, and renewable energy, Europe aims to mine 10%, refine 40%, and recycle 25% of its consumption domestically by 2030. The Netherlands, as a major trade hub, is in a unique position to contribute through refining, processing, and circular solutions. By investing in alternative supply chains, circularity, and innovation, the Netherlands strengthens its position in the global materials economy and reduces its reliance on a few dominant suppliers.
A crucial step for economic resilience and sustainability!
